Chatham / Kalamazoo
Thomas "Tom" Kenneth Buttery, age 70, of N3825 State Highway M-67, Chatham died under the loving care of his wife, children, twin brother and Lake Superior Hospice at his home on Saturday morning, April 24, 2010. He was born on March 3, 1940 in Kalamazoo, Michigan to the late Lyle and Esther (Marks) Buttery. Tom graduated from Richland Gull Lake High School. He joined the U.S. Army and served in from September 1959 until September 1962, spending time in Germany. Tom married Nancy Starring and together they raised their two sons. She preceded him in death in 1994. Tom worked as a steel fabricator for OIK and at Kalamazoo Supply for many years. He then went to work for Wenke's Greenhouses as their welder. Tom met Carole Haney at square dancing classes and they became partners for life. They danced many years as member of Square One Square Dancing Club. Tom and Carole were married on November 20, 1997 and moved to Chatham in 2002. Tom was a SORVA member of Alger County and he enjoyed ORVing, camping, bird watching, gardening, hunting, fishing, working in his shop, welding, playing cards on Friday nights, antiquing, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Tom is survived by his wife - Carole Buttery of Chatham; children - Wayne Buttery of Grand Rapids, Dean (Beth) Buttery of Kentwood, and Cheryl (Scott) Nash of Redmond, WA ; grandchildren - Ryan, Corbin, Jena, and Lainey; brother - Fred (Joan) Buttery of Kalamazoo; sister - Bette (Bernie) Young of Naples, FL; twin brother - Terry (Marty) Buttery of Richland, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at the Riverside Cemetery in Kalamzoo on Monday, May 10, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Military honors will be conducted by the Michigan National Guard and prayers will be conducted by Mike Darby. Following the services at the cemetery, Tom's family will receive friends at the home of Terry and Marty Buttery, 11381 East DE Avenue, Richland, MI.
