Munising
Thomas Richard Hyde, age 62, of Carmody Road, Munising, died on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at Marquette General Hospital. He was born on July 20, 1946 in Munising to the late Ted and Hilma (Erickson) Hyde. Tom graduated from Wm. G. Mather in 1965 and in August enlisted into the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed in Spain and Northern Africa where he was the Crew Chief Mechanic aboard a C-130 aircraft "Puff the Magic Dragon", and was involved in flights during the Six Day War. Tom was honorably discharged in August of 1968 returning to Munising where he worked for a short time before earning his carpentry associates degree and began working for Odevero as a carpenter. In 1978 Tom entered the National Guard in Company D of the 107th Engineers until 1990 where he was an E-6 Staff Sergeant. After working as a carpenter Tom began working as a color printer for Avery's Color Studio in AuTrain, Book Concern in Hancock, and Johnson Print Shop in Marquette before returning to Munising in 1989. He worked as a LST for Pathways for fourteen years before his health forced him retire. Tom was a skilled woodworker doing all of the woodwork at his home and camp. He loved music and playing his guitar. He enjoyed watching all football: high school, college, and cheering for his beloved Lions against his wife the Packer fan. Tom's favorite time was when he could be fishing with his grandchildren "at the dock of the bay" on Twin Lakes. He was a member of the VVA holding the office of secretary, an eighteen year member of the American Legion, and a proud member of the Legion Honor Guard. Tom also was a supporter of the Arbor Day Foundation.
He is survived by his wife, best friend, and long time sweetheart - Penny; son - Tommy II of Munising; daughter - Heather (Bill Nord) Hyde of AuTrain; stepson - Michael (Shelley) Sadak of Munising; grandchildren - Liane, Jason, Travis, Thomas, Savanah, Ozzy, Aiden, and John; siblings - Gladys Ellis, Shirley Reffruschinni, Fred (Sue) Hyde, Cindy (Dan) Wilson, Pat (Roger) Carlson, and David (Cindy) Hyde; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by infant son - Jason; parents - Ted and Hilma; infant sister - Kristine; sister-in-law - Barb Johnson; and brother-in-law - Jim Ellis.
A celebration of life will be held in Tom's honor at the American Legion Post #131 in Munising on Saturday, March 7, 2009 beginning at 4:00 p.m.
