Thomas J. "Tom" O'Connor, age 84, of AuTrain, died Friday, July 25, 2014 at his home under the loving care of his family and North Woods Hospice. He was born in Detroit on February 4, 1930 and graduated from Detroit Catholic Central High School. Tom then earned his Bachelor and Master's Degree from Michigan State University. He started his teaching career downstate before moving to the U.P. He taught at Wm. G. Mather and Munising High Schools teaching science and physics. After retiring in 1986, Tom continued teaching classes at the Jacobettti Center, Marquette Branch Prison, and substitute teaching at Superior Central. He married Jean Coombs on July 1, 1978 in their backyard overlooking AuTrain Lake. Tom loved rabbit and partridge hunting, fly and stream fishing, reading Western novels and outdoor garden books, gardening, snowmobiling with his friends, riding four wheelers with Jean, and photographing his nature and hunting trips. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Sacred Heart Church, the Michigan Education Association, and Toastmasters. Tom loved all of his dogs especially his rabbit hounds and bird dogs.
He is survived by his wife - Jean O'Connor of AuTrain; son - Todd O'Connor of Sparta, Kentucky; twin brother - Frank O'Connor of Redondo Beach, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Blanche O'Connor, and sister Eileen Rowan.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at the Bowerman Funeral Home from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. A combined Parish Vigil and Knights of Columbus service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Father Chris Gardiner will celebrate Tom's Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Munising. Interment will be at the Serenity Pines Cemetery in AuTrain.
Memorials in Tom's name may be directed to the Alger County Animal Shelter.
