Munising
Thomas Thorrington, age 91, of 222 E. Onota Street, died Saturday morning August 11, 2007 at the Jacobetti Veterans Home in Marquette. He was born on September 28, 1915 in Alliston, Ontario to James and Martha (Hart) Thorrington. Tom grew up in Grand Marais and graduated from Grand Marais High School in 1935. He worked at Hills Grocery until he entered into the U.S. Army on August 21, 1942. Tom was a member of the 88th Signal Battalion as a Code Breaker where he spent most of his time on Bougainvillea Island. Tom earned the Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, and participated in battles and campaigns at Luzon and Northern Solomons. Tom was discharged on December 7, 1945. He married Ruth McAllister on September 5, 1946 and moved to Munising. Tom worked as a meat cutter at the Red Owl for thirty-one years before retiring in 1977. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling with his children and during his retirement, he started ice fishing.
Tom is survived by his wife of over 60 years - Ruth Thorrington of Munising; three sons - Paul Thorrington of Belmont, MI, Dean (Mary )Thorrington of Cedar Springs, MI, and Ron (Karen) Thorrington of Munising; one grandson - Justin (Cristal) Thorrington of Marquette; one great-grandson Bradly; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents James and Martha, sister Prudence Shirey, and brothers James Jr. and William "Gus" Thorrington.
Services for Tom will be held on Thursday, August 16, 2007 at the Bowerman Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The Alger County Veterans Council and American Legion Honor Guard will begin the service at 7:00 p.m. Pastor Paul Kelto will continue with Tom's memorial service immediately following the military honors. There will also be a memorial service on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at 10:30 a.m.
