Toivo "Toby" Nummela

Toivo "Toby" Nummela, age 88, of Tunteri Road, Chatham, died on Monday, January 19, 2009 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. He was born on February 2, 1920 in Lawson to Matti and Anna (Maki) Nummela. Toby attended school in Rumely and then went to work in the woods. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII from February 11, 1942 until December 18, 1945. He was an M.P. in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and was involved in battles and campaigns at Luzon and the Southern Philippines. Toby earned the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the American Theater Service Medal. On December 21, 1946 he married Maria "Mary" Kivi and they moved to Detroit. Toby worked for the Burroughs Corporation in Detroit and retired from there. He was a Life Member of a V.F.W. Post near Detroit. Toby and Mary were married over fifty-six years when she preceded him in death on February 22, 2002. Toby returned to Chatham in 2004. He enjoyed hunting, golfing, taking care of his garden and dancing at Suomi Kuutsu dances with his friend Vivian Mattson.
Toby is survived by his brother - Urho Nummela of Eben; nephews - Robert "Bob" Nummela of Eben, Raymond "Ray" (Carolyn) Nummela of Negaunee; niece - Helen Kangas of Rudyard; and numerous great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary, twin brother Onnie, and brothers Sulo and Eino.
Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 and also at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Pastor Paul D. Kelto will conduct Toby's funeral service at the Sion Lutheran Church in Chatham on Friday, January 23, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham in the spring where the Alger County Veterans Council and American Legion Honor Guard will conduct military honors.
