Eben Junction
Urho M. Nummela, age 96, of Eben Junction, died early Thursday morning, July 5, 2018 at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette, Michigan. He was born on the family farm in Rumely to Matt and Anna (Maki) Nummela on November 13, 1921. Urho grew up working on the farm and attended school in Rumely. He left the farm to serve in the U.S. Army during WWII and served in the European-African -Middle Eastern Theater earning three bronze battle stars for Rome-Arno, Northern Apennines, and Po Valley. Urho served as a pioneer with the 362nd Infantry. When the War was over, he returned home and was a member of the Ikkala Brothers V.F.W. Post. Urho worked at the Mather B and Empire Mines and retired from there. He was a Detroit Tiger fan and enjoyed going to camp, hunting, fishing on Lake Superior, gardening, and traveling with his brother. Urho enjoyed his bachelor life and was a good uncle to his nephews and nieces.
He is survived by nephews – Ray (Carolyn) Nummela of Negaunee and Robert Nummela of Eben Junction; niece – Helen Kangas of Rudyard; and numerous great nieces and nephews. Urho was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Eino, Sulo, Onnie, and Toivo Nummela.
There will be a viewing at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Graveside services will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham. Military honors will be conducted by the Ikkala Brothers V.F.W., American Legion, and Vietnam Veterans Honor Guard and Pastor Paul Kelto will conclude with committal prayers.
Urho’s family would like to the staff at Jacobetti for the wonderful care that they provided to Urho while he was there.
