Kiva
Walter Tuuri, age 90, of Kiva, died in Trenary on Wednesday morning, May 23, 2012 under the loving care of his family and Lake Superior Hospice. He was born the youngest of eight children on the family farm in Kiva on October 3, 1921 to the late Henry Walter and Sophia Anna (Kivilahti) Tuuri. Walter graduated from the Mathias Township School in Trenary in 1941. He served in the military from October 1942 to April 1943. Walter married Mary Ann Matekel in July of 1955. Together they worked on the farm. Walter loved to entertain all of his nieces and nephews with tractor rides, hay rides, and fishing. He was very loving and caring. Walter loved to tell jokes and stories, and he always had ice cream. He and Mary loved to dance, go out for breakfast at the Wheels, and visit family.
He is survived by his loving wife Mary, sister-in-law Helen Matekel, and numerous nieces and nephews. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, brothers William, John, Henry, Ray, Jay, Ozzie, one sister Laila, and many other family members.
Services for Walter will held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Saturday, May 26, 2012. Visiting time with family and friends will be from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. The American Legion and Vietnam Veteran Honor Guards will conduct military honors at 4:00 p.m. and a celebration of Walter's life will immediately follow with Chuck Tooman officiating.
