Wanda Bernadette Drumsta passed away at St Mary's Hospital in Duluth Minnesota on November 17, 2009 after a short illness. Wanda was 87 years old.
Wanda was born on February 14, 1922 to the late Alice and Lawrence Hebert in Munising Michigan. The family then moved to Detroit Michigan in 1925 where she graduated from Nativity Catholic School at the age of 16. After graduating, she worked for Bell Telephone Company and held various other jobs as well. On October 30, 1941 Wanda married her first husband, James Mathis and had two children; Jim Mathis and Susan Mathis. Wanda met her second husband, Henry "Hank" Drumsta while working at National Machine Company in Utica, Michigan. They were wed on September 26, 1953 and had six children. Wanda and Hank purchased the Hilltop Grocery in 1957 from her parents and moved to Munising. They owned the store until 1971.
Wanda worked for the Alger County Commission on Aging from 1984 to her retirement in 2004. She worked with the senior dining program, Altran bus transportation, and meals on wheels while employed with the Commission on Aging. Her hobbies included card playing, reading, sewing and craft projects. She was a "social butterfly" and very much enjoyed spending time with friends and family. She moved to Minnesota after retirement in 2006.
Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, her first and second husbands, two sons; Arthur and Michael as well as two sisters Alice and Patsy, and one brother Larry.
Surviving relatives include six children - Jim (Charlotte) Mathis of St Clair Shores, MI, Susan (Bob) Mathis Miller of Eagan, MN, Cheryl (Art)Drumsta Milton of Sweet Springs, MO, David (Susan) Drumsta of Hermantown, MN, Jack Drumsta of Munising MI, and Nancy (Thomas Huncha) Drumsta of Buffalo, MN, sisters - Nancy Cook of Munising MI, Marilyn Heomke of Munising, MI, and Ernalee Dawson of Marquette, MI, and one brother - Patrick Hebert from Detroit MI.
Wanda is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, one great, great grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at the Bowerman Funeral Home at 12:00 noon with visititin time with family and friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
