Wilbert "Wieb" Maki, age 84, of Chatham, died Sunday, June 8, 2014 at his home under the loving care of his family and North Woods Home Hospice. He was born in Eben Junction, Michigan on April 10, 1930 to the late Frank and Pauline (Erickson) Maki. Wieb attended grade school in Forest Lake and then graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in Munising in 1948. He married Violet Hallstrom on September 29, 1951, and together they raised their four children. Wieb worked for a while for Knuttila Logging, getting an education in logging at the Kingston Plains. In 1951, he began his thirty-seven year career with the Alger County Road Commission working as a truck driver and heavy equipment operator. After retirement in 1988, Wieb worked part-time for the Village of Chatham as plow truck driver in the winter and mowing grass in the summer around the lagoon. He was also a member of the Rock River Township Volunteer Fire Department for thirty years. Wieb enjoyed spending time in the woods hunting, fishing, trapping, picking wild blue berries and raspberries, or anything that could get him outside. He was a kind and caring man, who looked forward to and cherished the time he could spend with his children and grandchildren.
Wieb is survived by his wife of over sixty-two years - Violet Maki of Chatham; four children - Dennis Maki of Minneapolis, MN, Colleen Maki of Houghton, Linda (John) Rasmussen of Chatham, and Suzanne (Ray) Vesey of Dexter, MI; grandchildren - Erica Lord, D.J. Price, Annie, Lindsay, and Tyler Dunn, and Melissa and Rachel Vesey; brothers - Norman (Janet) Maki of Chatham and Bernard (Eeva) Maki of Poway, CA; brothers and sisters-in-law - Helen (John) Uskoski, Dick (Alice) Hallstrom, Kenneth (Elizabeth ) Hallstrom, Bill (Tina) Hallstrom, Mary Jane (John) Whitmarsh, and Ron (Hester) Wiitanen; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents - Frank and Pauline; sister - Lila Maki; sisters-in-law - Margaret Maki and Jeanne Wiitanen; and mother and father-in-law - George and Annie Hallstrom.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m., and on Thursday, June 12 from 12:00 until 1:00 p.m. at the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church in Chatham. Ron Jouppe will officiate Wieb's funeral service at the church at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Wieb's name may be made to the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church of Chatham or North Woods Home Care and Hospice of Munising.
