William James Bauman, Jr

William James Bauman, Jr., age 92, of Comstock Park, Michigan and formerly of Munising, Gladstone, and Sheboygan, Wisconsin died on Wednesday morning, July 16, 2014 at his home under the care of Hospice of Michigan. He was born on March 6, 1922 in Munising to the late William "Tootie" and Hilda (Eymer) Bauman, Sr. Bill graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School. He and his father enlisted into the U.S. Navy together to fight in WWII. Bill served from September 22, 1942 until October 23, 1945 as a Sonar Man 2nd Class on the U.S.S. John Rodgers Destroyer. With his ship he participated in twelve major battles including: Iwo Jima, Battle of Leyte Gulf, and Guadalcanal. While on leave, he married Pearl Mildred Radloff on April 23, 1943. After the War, he returned to Munising and they raised their three children. Bill worked for and retired from the U.S. Postal Service as the rural route carrier out of Munising's post office. He was a former member of Sacred Heart in Munising, the Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion. Bill also owned and operated a sign painting business out of his home and also had his own band, Bill Bauman's Band. He was an extremely talented artist and musician. Bill and Jack Tiernan started the Silver Echoes Drum and Bugle Corps. They were both influential in many of the area's youth as they traveled all over and performed. In 1967, Bill received the Minuteman of the Year award from Governor George Romney. He and Pearl enjoyed playing Bridge and playing other cards with friends. They moved to Gladstone for a few years and Pearl preceded Bill in death on November 25, 1997 after over fifty-four years of marriage. Bill eventually moved to Sheboygan, Wisconsin and spent many years there. He enjoyed going to plays and musicals and he taught piano lessons until he was into his nineties. Bill moved to Comstock Park in the middle of June this year.

Bill is survived by his children - Penny (Dick) Koski of Chatham, Jim (Judy) Bauman of Rockford, MI, and Pat (Pete) Tiernan of Port Charlotte, FL; eight grandchildren - Richard, Karen, Kristi, David, Matt, Dan, Paul, and Nick; sixteen great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; and sister-in-law - Sue Bauman of Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Pearl, and brother Bob Bauman.

Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising on Sunday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Rev. Paul Kelto will conduct Bill's funeral service at the funeral home on Monday, July 21, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising where the American Legion and Vietnam Veteran Honor Guard will conduct military honors.
