Munising William L. "Bill" Cabanaw, age 84, of Negilski Road in Munising, died Monday, May 6, 2013 at Marquette General Hospital surrounded by his loving family, following a brief illness. Bill was born in Wyandotte, Michigan on September 18, 1928, to Lawrence and Freda (Reno) Cabanaw. He moved to Munising in the mid 1940's. Bill married Stella Woodaz on August 28, 1948, and together they raised their four children. He spent a short time working for Munising Woodenware and the Munising Paper Company. Bill then entered into the United States Army in February of 1952, and was honorably discharged as a Corporal in January of 1954. In 1954 he and Stella moved to Trenton, MI, where Bill began working as a welder for McLouth Steel for eighteen years. In 1975 they moved back to Munising. Bill began his employment with Munising Public Schools, first as a bus driver and then as a custodian at the Wm. G. Mather School, retiring in 1991. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping. Bill was a member of the Lincoln Bowman Archery Club downstate, and a member of Sacred Heart Church in Munising. Bill is survived by his wife of over sixty-four years - Stella Cabanaw, of Munising; children - Bill (Carol), Buzz (Lori), and Mark (Mary Alice) Cabanaw all of Munising, and Cecile Jeffries of Escanaba; grandchildren - Billy and Michelle Cabanaw, Bobby (Danielle) Cabanaw, Chelsea ( Cole) Thoreson, Kristal (Derek) Poupor, Megan (Kevin) Denton, and Kasey, Alex and Zach Jeffries; ten great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents - Lawrence Cabanaw and Freda Lewis; and numerous cousins. Bill's Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Father Chris Gardiner on Friday, May 10, 2013 at 12:10 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Munising. A luncheon will follow at Mark and Mary Alice's Home.Graveside services will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising at 10:00 a.m. The American Legion and Vietnam Veterans Honor Guards will be there to conduct military honors and a clergyman from Sacred Heart will be there for committal prayers.
