William "Bill" Hill, age 78, of Munising, died Friday, January 23, 2015 at UP Health Systems - Marquette. He was born on March 8, 1936 in VanMeer to the late Floyd and Pearl (Humphrey) Hill. Bill attended the little blue school house in VanMeer and then Wm. G. Mather High School. In June of 1954 he entered into the U.S. Army and became a Military Policeman. Bill served overseas for nearly three years in Okinawa, and at one point was on detail in escorting Marilyn Monroe. In September of 1959, Bill was honorably discharged, and was awarded a Marksman, Good Conduct, and National Defense Service Medal. He began working at Harthow in 1966 and retired as a forklift driver from Timber Products in 1998. Bill enjoyed camping, fishing, trips to the casino, traveling to some of the UP tourist areas like Big Springs and Fayette, and taking family home videos.
He is survived by his wife - Janis Hill of Munising; children - Shirley Doane of VanMeer, Sherry Hill of Detroit, Frank William (Letha Groeneveld) Hill of VanMeer, Phillip Hill of Detroit, Glenn (Kathi) Hill of Iowa, Marlena (Brian) Cromell of Shingleton, Brenda (Don) Watson of Wetmore, and Allen "Champ" Miron of Wetmore; fourteen grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; brothers - Richard (Carole), Jim (Judy), and Jerry Hill; brother-in-law - Harlond (Julie) Foster; sister-in-law - Becky Hill; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Bill was preceded in death by his parents - Floyd and Pearl; son - William Hill, Jr.; brother - Bob Hill; grandson - Allen Jordan Miron; mother-in-law - Vera Foster; and sister-in-law - Margaret Foster.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m. at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising. Pastor Jason LaFlamme will conduct Bill's funeral at 3:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Munising Township Cemetery in Wetmore on Wednesday, May 6, 2015, where the American Legion and Vietnam Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military honors.
