Munising
William "Bill" Kinnunen, age 91, of Connors Road, Munising, died on Friday morning, February 27, 2009 at Munising Memorial Hospital. He was born on October 29, 1917 at Miners, one of eleven children, to Oscar and Elizabeth (Niemi) Kinnunen. Bill moved with his family to Foster's Addition and then to Carberry Hill where he was raised. He attended school in Munising and served four years with the CCC's in Steuben. Bill married Irene Dominick on September 15, 1940. They moved to Hamtramck and Bill worked for Vicar's Machinery during WWII. They returned to Munising in 1945 and Bill worked as a carpenter at Camp Cusino. He began employment at Kimberly Clark on March 23, 1953. Bill started working in the Engineering Dept. and 1st Carpenter. He filled in as Temporary Structural foreman as of March 27, 1957 and then promoted to Carpenter on July 15, 1964. Bill remained in that job throughout his years of service until his retirement on May 1, 1979. He was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Parish and of the Knights of Columbus. Bill enjoyed fishing, hunting, and building projects. He and Irene cherished over sixty-eight years of marriage before she preceded him in death on April 6, 2008.
He is survived by their children - Helen Peters of Munising; sons - William Kinnunen, Jr. of Munising, Raymond (Renee') Kinnunen of Stillwater, OK, Ronald Kinnunen of Marquette, and Donald (Betty) Kinnunen of Shingleton; eleven grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; brothers - Jerry (Roberta) Kinnunen and Reino (Nancy) Kinnunen all of Munising; sisters - Ann Birkholz of Grand Forks, ND, Lillian Hampel of Burlington, WA, Nancy Lindell of Olympia, WA, and Bertha Hill of Dukes, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, wife Irene, son-in-law Charlie Peters, brothers Eino and Raymond Kinnunen, and sisters Aina Tonge and Helen Tousek.
Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 3rd from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A combined Parish Vigil and Knights of Columbus service will be held at 7:00 p.m. During the Vigil service, there will be a time for friends and family to share stories and remembrances. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Chris Gardiner at Sacred Heart Church on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising in the spring. Bill will be escorted by his grandsons and great-grandson.
