Grand Marais
William "Bill" LaCombe, age 91, of Everett Avenue in Grand Marais, Michigan, died on Wednesday morning, February 18, 2009 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. He was born on August 7, 1917 in Grand Marais to the late A. Joseph and Helen (Houston) LaCombe. Bill was a graduate of Grand Marais High School in 1935. He worked for the CCC's and W.P.A before marrying Alice Johnson on July 3, 1939. Together they raised their six children. Bill was the AuSable Lighthouse tender, worked as the Postmaster in Blaney Park, fished commercially, worked at the Air Force Base in Grand Marais at the Power Distribution Plant, and then logged in the woods. In 1960, he began his employment with the Alger County Road Commission and retired from there in 1982. Bill enjoyed working, hunting, and watering his grass, but he could not wait until winter so he could be out shoveling and snowshoeing.
Bill is survived by his five children - Jeanette Marfizo, of Silver Spring, MD, Ralph LaCombe of Grand Marais, Don (Pattie) LaCombe of Wyoming, MI, Chuck (Pat) LaCombe of Ada, MI, and Lois Kinlaw of Grand Marais; son-in-law Jerry Coles of Tampa, FL; twenty one grandchildren; twenty six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and niece - Carol Davies of San Diego, CA. He was preceded in death by his wife - Alice LaCombe in 1987; daughter - Helen Ann Coles in 1992, sister - Margaret Burke; and son-in-law - John Marfizo.
Graveside services will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grand Marais in May.
