William "Bill" Lockwood

William J. "Bill" Lockwood, age 86, a lifelong resident of Munising, went to be with his Lord, Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at the Superior Health Haven in Munising, where he had lived for the past nine years. He was born on October 17, 1926 in Munising to the late Robert and Pearl (Delger) Lockwood. Bill was a William G. Mather high School graduate class of 1944. He enlisted into the U.S. Navy, where he became a Motor Machinist's Mate Third Class, working on amphibious vessels. Bill earned the WWII Victory Medal, American Area Campaign and Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medals, and was honorably discharged in 1946. He worked for many years for the Alger County Road Commission, starting as a heavy equipment operator and later retiring as a Superintendent. Bill was an avid Green Bay Packer fan, and took many trips to Lambeau Field to watch his beloved Packers. He also enjoyed playing and coaching softball, golfing at Pictured Rock Golf Course and in Florida during his winters, and having an extensive bowling career, even rolling a 300 game. Bill was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion. Bill's favorite place in town was the Dogpatch Restaurant; he loved eating there, visiting with friends, and flirting with the waitresses.
He is survived by his brother Jim (Pam) Lockwood of Shelter Bay, and numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Jayne Lockwood, Anne (John) Carr, Margaret Lange, Katie Lockwood, and Bud Lockwood.
Visitation will be on Saturday, June 29, 2013 from 8:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. at the Bowerman Funeral Home. Fr. Chris Gardiner will celebrate Bill's Funeral Mass on Saturday, at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery where the American Legion and Vietnam Veteran Honor Guard will conduct Military Honors.
Memorials in Bill's name may be made to the Superior Health Haven or North Woods Home Hospice.
