Christmas
William "Bill" L. Mercier, Jr., age 69, of Christmas, died unexpectedly Friday, January 24, 2014 at Marquette General Hospital. He was born in Munising on April 6, 1944 to the late William and Helen (Raymond) Mercier, Sr. Bill graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in Munising in 1962. He served in the United States Navy. Bill worked as a machinist and die maker for General Motors for thirty years before his retirement in 1995. He married Bonnie Lockhart on October 27, 1990, and after retirement they moved to Christmas. Bill enjoyed watching non-fiction and historical documentaries on T.V., bowling, shooting and reloading, playing cribbage with his good friend Dykeman, and being involved in the Masons. Bill was 32nd Degree Scottish Rite / York Rite Mason. He served as the Past Master and current Senior Deacon of the Grand Island Lodge #422 Free and Accepted Masons, and Master of Eastern Star, and a member of Eden Lutheran Church.
Bill is survived by his wife of twenty-three years - Bonnie Mercier of Christmas; children - Brenda (Bob) Bernath of Owosso, MI and Tom (Angela) Mercier of Harrisburg, NC; stepchildren - Rob Riley of Lapeer, MI, Kelly (John) Griffin of Columbiaville, MI, Shelly (Patrick) Keenan of Austin, TX, and Patrick Riley of Lansing, MI; grandchildren - Derek, Dakota, Hannah, Grace, Luke, and Finley; numerous step-grandchildren; sister - Elizabeth (Stanley) Boyer; and brother-in-law Duryl Bradley. He was preceded in death by his parents William and Helen, and sister Linda Bradley.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at the Bowerman Funeral Home from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. His services will begin at 5:00 p.m. with the Eastern Star and Masonic service followed by Pastor Elisabeth Zant conducting his funeral at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in the spring.
