William "Bill" A. Niemi, age 66, of Chatham, died Saturday, March 14, 2009 at Munising Memorial Hospital. He was born on February 13, 1943 in Marquette, MI to the late Edward and Pearl (Sipila) Niemi. Bill was a carpenter all of his life. He began to learn his skills watching his father and eventually served his apprenticeship under him. Bill was a member of the Carpenters Union Local 1510, and worked all over the U.P. One project that he often recalled was working on the overlook at Miners Castle. Bill enjoyed spending time with friends and family, and traveling all over the U.S. to visit them. He was a member of the Munising Moose Lodge and was a Son of the American Legion. Bill's family would like to give a special thanks to Julie Moulds for the care and concern she has given him over the past five years.
Bill is survived by his four daughters - Janice (Jesper) Stockler of Overland Park, KS, Christine (Jim) Inman, Suzanne (Ralph) Starner, and Patty Smith all of Cheyenne, WY; son - Brian Niemi of Sheboygan, WI; grandchildren - Erik and Alex Stockler, Julie and Laura Inman, Mathew, Erin, Eli, and Sofie Starner, Patrick and Tayler Smith, and Jordan Niemi; brothers - Les (Marcia) and Eddie; sister - Betty; and several nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Pearl.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising. Bill's funeral will begin at immediately following visitation at 6:00 p.m. Interment will be at Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham this spring.
