Munising / Scio Township
John J. Walton, age 76, of Munising and formerly of Scio Township, Michigan, died peacefully on Friday, August 11, 2023 at the Harbour View Assisted Living in Munising under the care of their caring staff and North Woods Home Hospice. He was born on December 27, 1946 in Marquette, Michigan to the late John and Elizabeth “Betty” (Devine) Walton. John and his family moved downstate in 1952. He graduated from Ann Arbor Pioneer High School in 1965, where he was a State Champion Gymnast. John entered into the United States Marine Corp in 1965. He served in Vietnam and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. In 1969, John was aboard the USS Hornet and was part of the recovery team of the astronauts of Apollo 11. John was honorably discharged in 1970 as a Seargent. In his younger years, John enjoyed boxing, karate, and playing softball. He was diehard Redwings fan, enjoyed flying, and loved everything U.P. John worked for the utilities department in Scio Township for 27 years, and he also was a volunteer firefighter for the township. After retirement John moved back to the Upper Peninsula and lived in Sault Ste. Marie before moving to Munising.
John is survived by his children Casey Walton of Plymouth, MI and Hallie (Jamaal) McCluskey of Miami, OH; grandchildren – Brylee and Kyren; brother – Jim (Libby) Walton. He was preceded in death by his parents Betty and John Walton.
John’s family would like to thank the incredible staff at Harbour View who provided such great care these past few years.
